Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman traveled to Albania on Wednesday to inaugurate Israel’s newest embassy.

The embassy in Tirana will be the 10th new mission opened since Liberman took over at the Foreign Ministry in 2009. Another three are scheduled to open later in the year – an embassy in the Congo and new consulates in China and Russia.

The Tirana embassy will be Israel’s 101st mission abroad.

Lieberman went to Albania last year, marking the first visit there from an Israeli foreign minister in 17 years.

He said that while the opening of a new diplomatic mission was always a “festive occasion” for Israel, this was especially true when it came to opening a mission in a country like Albania, which is a NATO member state and has a 70-percent Muslim population.

He is scheduled to meet Albanian President Bujar Nishani, Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Foreign Minister Edmond Panariti and opposition leader Edi Rama.
