A square in the capital city Tirana will be named after the recently deceased Israeli president, Mr. Shimon Peres, a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and an internationally recognized symbol of peace and tolerance.
The initiative of Israeli deputy Ambassador Mr. Yuvale Fischer was happily accepted by Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj. “It is a gesture that gives justice to the grandeur of the man, the Albanian people and the special relationship between the two countries,” said Mr. Fischer to Albanian Daily News.
As is well known, Albania and Israel have enjoyed a longstanding relationship of mutual respect and appreciation, and deep friendship. “This special relationship has existed not only between our two governments, but between our two peoples who have much in common,” Mr. Fischer said.
The square, which is situated at the intersection of cross roads “Kujtim Laro”, “Sadik Petrela” and “Xhanfize Keko”, will have a physical symbol of Mr. Peres that would serve as a permanent reminder to both Albanians and Israeli tourists strolling along the beautiful streets and avenues of Tirana.
The inauguration of the Shimon Peres square will officially open at July
